Salman Shaikh and Dr Sheikha Jabor al-Thani shake hands after signing the MoU yesterday
Qatar University (QU) and the Brookings Doha Centre (BDC) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Visiting Fellowship Programme.
The MoU was signed by QU vice-president and chief academic officer Dr Sheikha Jabor al-Thani and BDC director Salman Shaikh in the presence of QU and BDC officials, deans, and faculty.
The aim of the Visiting Fellowship Programme is to tap into the two organisations’ established expertise in research and academia in the Gulf, and create a targeted discussion on the future of Qatar and the broader region during a critical time of transition.
Under the agreement, the Programme will host two visiting fellows who exemplify the standards of academic excellence of both institutions, and who possess significant research concentration, publication history, and intellectual rigour.
The visiting fellows’ role would be to produce original research for the BDC in the form of policy briefs and other publications, on an agreed proposal covering any aspect of Gulf studies, politics, security, economics, media, and social issues.
Included in the Fellowship Programme is a teaching component in which the Visiting Fellows will conduct one undergraduate/graduate-level course and one senior research level course at QU based on his/her research topic.
The teaching component covers a wide range of disciplines, including international affairs pertinent to the Middle East with particular focus on Gulf-based contemporary political, security, economic, historical and social issues.
The candidates for the Fellowship Programme will be involved in research projects that can be tackled from educational, policy setting, and legal perspectives.
Inclusion of the teaching and research components will provide selected candidates with the opportunity to leverage the wealth of expertise in Qatar, as well as allow both the BDC and QU to expand their core competencies in the areas of focus.
