The Qatar Museums Authority (QMA), led by HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, yesterday announced the appointment of Sheikha Amna bint Abdulaziz bin Jassim al-Thani as director of the under-construction National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ). Sheikha Amna will oversee the progress of the museum’s project, provide curatorial and managerial leadership, and supervise NMoQ’s continuous initiatives that include education and public programmes and activities as well as special exhibitions and conferences.
Sheikha Amna has been an integral part of the NMoQ team over the past two years, initially co-ordinating with the Steering Committee and since December 2012, as the NMoQ acting director.
She holds a Bachelor of Science degree, with honours, in Business Administration and a minor in English from Carnegie Mellon University. She has also attained a Master of Science degree, with merit, in Sociology from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Prior to joining the QMA, Sheikha Amna worked at International Qatar in the Investment Banking Division. In 2010, she joined the chairperson’s office as director of finance and strategy, overseeing special projects. She is also on the Middle East Board of the World Class Learning Group.
The NMoQ features an innovative design by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel. It is inspired by the desert rose that grows organically around the original Emiri palace.
The museum will celebrate the culture and heritage of Qatar and its people, embodying the pride and traditions of Qataris while offering international visitors a dialogue about rapid change and modernisation.
The NMoQ will represent the past, present and future of Qatar through exhibitions, educational activities, cultural site visits, and technology-based programming.
