The Court of First Instance has ordered the dismissal of an engineer from his public job, besides the imposition of a QR500,000 fine, in a bribery case, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.
Two other engineers working as managers of two private contracting firms got 10-year jail terms in the same case. The ruling was later appealed and the Court of Appeal reduced the jail term to two years but upheld the other sentences. The defendants then took the case to the Court of Cassation, which overturned the verdict and ordered that the case should go back to the Court of Appeal for review with a new panel of judges.
The first defendant, who works in a public entity, asked for money, gifts and favours from the two other defendants in exchange for giving them information about the value of a tender of a phase of the Expressway project.
According to a report based on Public Prosecution investigations, the first defendant got several gifts and gift vouchers from the other two, besides receiving payments for travel expenses and finishing some construction works worth QR200,000.
The first accused told the two that the tender for the said project was worth around QR220mn and they used the information to bid accordingly and won the contract.
