A variety of historical pieces from the Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum collection will tour Europe as part of the ‘Cultures in Dialogue’ international exhibition, which was announced at a launching event held on Sunday in Doha.
‘Cultures in Dialogue’ will be held in several European cities over the next two years from September 2018 in Valetta (Malta), the European Capital of Culture, and will head to other cities, including Paris where Unesco’s headquarters is located.
The exhibition aims to stimulate dialogue between cultures, religions, and countries on the relevance of cultural heritage. It will be an opportunity for people to interact with stories of exchange, tolerance, inspiration, innovation, and understanding that are concealed in the objects highlighted in the exhibition.
‘Cultures in Dialogue’ will be held in collaboration with Qatar Museums Authority, Unesco, and Qatar Shell to showcase the exchange and dialogue among civilisations and cultures through a selected number of artefacts from the museum’s vast collection. The event was highlighted by the signing of a sponsorship agreement between FBQ chairman Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim al-Thani and Qatar Shell Companies chairman and managing director Andrew Faulkner.
The signing was held in the presence of HE the Minister of State Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, FBQ Museum vice chairman Sheikha al-Anood Faisal al-Thani, Qatar National Committee for Education, Science and Culture secretary general Dr Hamda al-Sulaiti, and Unesco Doha Office director Dr Anna Paolini.
Sheikh Faisal said, “We are grateful for the confidence placed on us by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and we believe that together with Unesco, we will actively serve our role of keeping alive the history, culture, and traditions for the next generations to learn and draw from, thus enriching and influencing society in a positive way.
“We would like to thank Qatar Shell for their sponsorship towards the museum’s international exhibition. Our partnership is a great opportunity to position Qatar and the wider Arab region as a cultural hub to an international audience.”
Sheikha al-Anood said, “We are excited to officially launch ‘Cultures in Dialogue’ with our partners and be able to play such an important role in promoting cultural dialogue and sharing Qatar’s culture and inspiring stories.”
Faulkner stressed, “We are delighted to sign this sponsorship agreement with the Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani Museum, demonstrating our shared aim to foster dialogue and understanding between Qatar and the world.
“Our partnership will help build awareness of Qatar’s commitment to outreach, openness, and integration through the nation’s art, heritage and culture, as well as linking it with that of other peoples and civilisations.”
Al-Sulaiti said the exhibition will build bridges of communication that transcend differences, and will promote a spirit of tolerance and peace among the peoples of the world.
“No doubt that the archaeological and artistic artifacts, heritage collections and all forms of heritage that will be part of the ‘Cultures in Dialogue’ exhibition will be a fertile source for enriching human culture, helping to promote and sustain diversity and cultural dialogue among the peoples of the world,” al-Sulaiti said.
Paolini said, “’Cultures in Dialogue’ is more than an exhibition of beautiful and meaningful objects from Sheik Faisal’s collection. It is an example of how through artefacts we can tell a story of the intertwining of different cultures.
“It tells us how museums play the important role and bear responsibility to provide educational and cultural opportunities to the public to engage, to build self-awareness, create openness to knowledge, appreciation and understanding of cultural diversity, and foster life-long learning.”
In the following months, FBQ Museum will announce more details on the international touring exhibition to attract visitors from the different venues where it will be hosted.
