Vaccination against Covid-19 has two benefits for children, Dr Mohamed Ahmed Janahi, medical director of Sidra Medicine Outpatient Clinics and associate professor of Paediatrics - Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, has said.
Vaccination protects them against infection from Omicron and prevents hospitalisation and intensive care, he explained while speaking to Qatar TV, adding that it also prevents the multiplication of viruses in the throat that causes them to produce new types or mutate.
Dr Janahi noted that vaccination is effective against Covid-19 in children. Scientific studies have proven that the effectiveness of vaccination reached 91%, and the side effects of vaccination for children were found to be minor symptoms, which prompted countries to introduce vaccination for this age group.
The Ministry of Public Health on Sunday approved the administration of Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for children aged five to 11 years in Qatar.
