The UN appointed HE Dr Ali bin Fetais al-Marri as UN Special Advocate on the Prevention of Corruption for the first time in 2012 due to his work on anti-corruption files through several governmental and non-governmental international organisations.
The UN renewed his mandate several times expanding his responsibilities to include several aspects relevant to anti-corruption stipulated in the chapters of the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
During his successive terms, the Special Advocate was able to recover stolen funds to some Arab countries and assisted countries in their transitional period by providing the necessary training for several law enforcement officers to uphold the principles of justice.

He supported the development of governmental and non-governmental training centres to provide adequate help for legal institutions through the Doha-based Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Center in co-operation with various UN institutions.
The new mandate includes several tasks such as the implementation and support of activities related to anti-corruption policies in the Arab region in general, especially those related to young parliamentarians and other legislative bodies.
This position is also concerned with stabilising and strengthening the contribution of parliamentarians to work on policies to prevent corruption, and to provide advice, capacity building, education, and other activities stipulated in the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
The Special Advocate also works on supporting the UN in its endeavours to provide technical assistance to enact mechanisms of co-ordination and co-operation between the countries of the region and to benefit from the experiences and expertise of other countries, and bilateral and multilateral co-operation to fight corruption.
