HE Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Rule of Law and UN Special Advocate on the Prevention of Corruption Dr. Ali bin Fetais Al Marri said that holding the 6th edition of His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award, in conjunction with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, highlights the State of Qatar's great contribution to efforts to fight and combat corruption, just as it gives high confidence to the award winners to continue contributing to these efforts.
At a press conference held on Thursday at Sheraton Doha Hotel after the Award ceremony HE Dr. Al Marri stressed that sustainable development is one of the most important priorities of the united Nations, and it cannot be realized without continuing to fight corruption, underscoring that HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani has captured this matter when he honored those who spared no effort in combatting corruption while in power.
His Excellency pointed out that the issue of corruption is present in all places and is not linked to specific countries, as there is no utopia. Countries are on the right track when they recognize the existence of corruption and start fighting it through enacting laws, he added.
HE Dr. Al Marri stressed that the Fourth Authority, journalism and media, bears a great responsibility in raising corruption issues, pointing to the presence of journalists among the recipients of the His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani International Award for Excellence in Combating Corruption.
For his part, UN Affairs expert Dr. Eduardo Viteri said that introducing a new category of combating corruption in sports in the sixth edition of the "His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award" makes a big difference coming in conjunction with the organization of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 for the first time in an Arab country.
Dr. Viteri agreed with HE Dr. Ali bin Fetais Al Marri that there is no country that is free and immune from corruption, lauding the countries that contributed to curtailing it, especially in light of the difficulty of uprooting it.
