Over 1mn fans have visited Qatar up to the semifinals of the ongoing FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, a senior official announced Friday, confirming the fulfillment of the organiser’s target for the mega sport event.
“We are very pleased to announce that over 1mn fans have visited Qatar for the FIFA World Cup, up to the semifinals,” Fatma al-Nuaimi, communications & media executive director, Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, tweeted.
This is in accordance with the expectations of the host country, as Nasser al-Khater, CEO of Qatar 2022, told Gulf Times recently in an exclusive interview.
Al-Khater had explained on December 10 that the number of fans will cross one million mark in the next few days as the quarterfinal matches were about to take place.
“Close to 800,000 fans and visitors have already reached the country for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Within the coming days the number is expected to go beyond one million,” al-Khater said. He had also pointed out that many more fans were on the way for the next round of matches.
“The number of fans that have attended the tournament and reached the country are in line with our plans. We are getting very positive feedback from various corners about the tournament and its organisation so far. The tournament has exceeded our expectations on certain fronts,” he noted.
