President of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), Mohammed Hassan Jalood asserted that the great boom in weightlifting in Qatar in recent years, granted Qatar's privilege of hosting one of the seven qualifying sessions for the 2024 French Olympics.

In an interview with Qatar News Agency (QNA), Jalood said that the Qatar Cup scheduled December 2023 will be one of the seven tournaments that qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

He added that the selection of Qatar is due to the great confidence it has enjoyed in the International Federation over the past years, in addition to its great success in hosting a large group of weightlifting championships over recent years in a distinctive way, in addition to the great reputation that Qatar enjoys in hosting the most prominent sporting events, the latest of which was the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The IWF President stated that the number of weights in the Olympics was reduced from 12 to 10, with five for women: 49 kg, 59 kg, 71 kg, 81 kg, over 81 kg, and five for men: 61 kg, 73 kg, 89 kg, 102 kg, over 102 kg.

Jalood noted the distinguished organisational level of the Men's West Asian Weightlifting Championship in its ninth edition, and the Men's and Women's Qatar Weightlifting Cup in its seventh edition, which were organised by the Qatar Weightlifting Federation simultaneously.

He pointed out that the next edition of the Qatar Cup scheduled Dec. 2023 will have a huge participation of world champions, especially as it is one of the international tournaments that qualify for the Olympics.
