Qatar recycles all World Cup waste, converts it into energy

HE the Minister of Municipality Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie affirmed the ministry's success in recycling all waste generated from the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and benefiting from it in the field of energy, as part of the country's efforts towards a model and environment-friendly tournament.
During his participation in the opening discussion session of the Second World Congress of Engineering and Technology, he said that the ministry has effectively contributed to achieving the goal set by Qatar in organising an environment-friendly championship, and made a great achievement in waste recycling and treatment.
HE the minister stressed that the Qatar World Cup 2022 was the first in the history of the tournament in which 100% of the waste generated is recycled and converted into energy.
He touched on the initiatives and achievements of the Ministry as well, including the accreditation of all eight municipalities of Qatar as healthy cities by the World Health Organisation, the accession of Qatari cities to the network of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the success in the initiative to plant one million trees, and the increase in the proportion of green spaces, which has increased 10 times between 2010 and 2022, in addition to increasing the number of fishing ports, central markets, and other achievements that included various sectors that fall within the scope of the Ministry's competence.
HE al-Subaie addressed the Ministry's contribution to moving towards an integrated infrastructure that contributes to achieving the requirements of development at the national level, enhancing the food security sector, transforming the country's cities into smart cities, and working to increase the efficiency of digital transformation and automating procedures between the Ministry's sectors and the relevant authorities.
He said the Ministry of Municipality is always working to transform challenges into opportunities to overcome any crisis and accomplish the required achievements, which is what happened with food security. "Although the State of Qatar is not an agricultural and food-producing country due to its desert nature and water scarcity, however, in cooperation with its partners from government agencies and the private sector, it has succeeded in turning this challenge into an opportunity to enhance its food security strategy and achieve high levels of self-sufficiency in many agricultural, animal, fish and other products."
In a related context, HE al-Subaie said that the Ministry of Municipality aims, through its future strategy, towards contributing to providing a sustainable and high-level living environment for the country's residents, by creating urban plans that are in line with modern life, compatible with the Qatari environment and contributes to building a distinguished infrastructure that serves the aspirations and projects of other sectors in the country, and thus attracts various investments to those sectors.
He pointed to the ministry's contribution to the completion of many projects and technical studies related to the urban planning sector, including: the comprehensive urban plan for the State of Qatar, urban centers, geological maps for the State of Qatar (phase one), flood studies, and the coastal zone management project.
HE the minister affirmed that the policies and work mechanisms established through the urban plans aim to provide the necessary support for the private sector and small companies, adding: "The ministry provides the necessary lands to encourage the industry, trade, agriculture and services sector in various fields."
He touched on the fruitful cooperation between the Ministry of Municipality and Qatar University in the field of research and studies that support the fields of work of the various sectors of the ministry, including the agricultural sector, as well as benefiting from the research on sand and building materials conducted by the university.
In this context, he noted the important role played by the university towards the various sectors of the country, stressing the keenness to strengthen partnership with it, as it is the academic and scientific tributary on which the ministry relies.
