Hassad Food, Qatar’s investment arm in food and agribusiness sectors, announced the production of about 35,000 tonnes of green fodder (alfalfa, Rhodes grass and barley) in the country over three years to support the local livestock sector, thereby contributing to achieving food security.Hassad increased the locally cultivated land area to approximately 10mn sq m, across three farms in Irkiyyah, A’Riffa and A’Sailiya (specialised in producing green fodder), a statement explained Tuesday.Hassad also developed a plan that includes developing five additional pivots (a form of targeted irrigation system) for green fodder production, spanning over 1.8mn sq m.Hassad Food has allocated two pivots on an area of 600,000sq m for pivot irrigation via solar energy – for the first time in the local fodder production sector – in line with the company’s plans to utilise the use of renewable energy in agriculture.Hassad also has a plan to increase the number of pivots that operate via solar energy to six while bringing the total area to 1.8mn sq m.Hassad provides alternative animal feed products (fodder cubes and grass) with affordable prices for livestock owners. This is in order to ensure the availability of commodities throughout the year and stabilise the prices. These alternative products have high nutritional value as they contain a high percentage of protein and is suitable for feeding all types of livestock. The company's products are available through eight sales points: Al Sheehaniya, Al Mazroua, Semsema, Al Wakra Central Market, Al Wakra, Abu Nakhla, Al Karaana, and Irkiyah.Three additional sales points are planned in Al Khuraib, Al Rayes, and Al Khor to meet the needs of livestock owners for animal feed.
