Qatar Rail marked the 12th edition of National Sport Day (NSD) with a Guinness World Record, as part of its commitment to support the efforts of Qatar aimed at encouraging the individuals to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Qatar Rail joined the Ministry of Transport (MoT) NSD event in Al Saad Plaza at Lusail Boulevard. A Padel event, including a mini tournament, for Qatar Rail staff and their families was held at Aspire zone.
During the NSD, Qatar Rail managing director and CEO HE Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie received the Guinness World Records certificate for the largest padel championship in the world (Qatar Rail Open), organised from September 11 to 17, 2022, in partnership with Padel In and with a record participation of 778 players.
The Qatar Rail Open Padel Championship witnessed a record participation of 389 teams of different age groups, including 12 teams from four Gulf countries -- two teams each from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, in addition to four teams each from Kuwait and Bahrain. As part of its preparations for the NSD, Qatar Rail launched the first event under the 'Metro Events' series, which will be held for the public at Doha Metro stations throughout the year.
This initiative comes under the company long-term strategic plan to transform metro stations into destinations and living communities through active engagements with the public. The event entitled (Sport? This way! ) is held at the Sport City station on the metro's Gold Line until February 16, and is hosting a number of prominent sports clubs, such as Al Rayyan, and Al Duhail, to display their various promotional products amongst other renowned retailers offering sport accessories, telecom services, food and beverage amongst others.
“The celebration of the NSD this year is exceptional to us, as it coincides with the celebration of our new record in the Guinness Book of Records for the second time. We are pleased with this partnership with Padel In, and we are looking forward to developing it to continue achieving more records, develop the Padel sport and support in discovering young Qatari’s talents whom aspire to be professional players and represent the stat e of Qatar in international tournaments,” said Abdulla Ali al-Mawlawi, Communication and Public Relations director at Qatar Rail.
Mohamed Saadon al-Kuwari, co-founder of Padel In, said the ongoing partnership with Qatar Rail has given it the opportunity to participate in setting a new world record adding to the list yet another achievement for Qatar in the Guinness Book of World Records. "We are looking forward for future collaboration under this partnership with Qatar Rail and further support Qatar presence in the Padel game,” he added.
