A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck at dawn Sunday in the remote New Britain region of Papua New Guinea. No tsunami warning has been issued following the tremor.
The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 38 km, and there are no reports of serious damage or injuries.
On Saturday evening, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake also struck the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan, and coastal cities were affected without leading to a tsunami warning, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) informed.
Papua New Guinea is vulnerable to earthquakes because it lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire. In February 2018, a devastating earthquake hit Papua New Guinea, leaving more than 100 people dead and landslides that buried dozens of villages.
