Joe Jones of Wales shot a stunning five-under-par 67 to win the 37th Qatar Open Golf Amateur Championship by two strokes at the Doha Golf Club (DGC) yesterday.Jones, who carded 73 and 75 in the first two rounds, took full advantage of improved conditions at the course to finish with an aggregate of one-under 215. With the triumph, the Wales’ golfer sealed his place in the prestigious Commercial Bank Qatar Masters 2023 that will take place from October 26 to 29. It was a Welsh one-two as James Nash finished runner-up after carding a two-under-par 70 for a total of 217.England’s Reece Goodyear, who led the first two rounds, shot 73 on the decisive day to finish third, aggregating 219 while DGC’s Calum Fitzgerald, who had a shaky start with 77 on Thursday, fired another 72 yesterday to finish fourth with a total of 221.Qatar’s Saleh Ali al-Kaabi secured a top five finish with an aggregate of 223 after scoring 74, while Pakistan’s Omar Khalid Hussain (225) finished sixth after a card of 74 in the final round.South-Korea born Russian Daniil Sokolov (227), England’s Sam Epstein (227), Tej Ganjavarapu (228) and Olivier van Lelyveld (229) received special prizes courtesy top 10 finish.Qatar’s Ali al-Shahrani (230), who won the title two years ago, struggled on the decisive day carding 82 to finish 11th.
