"IndiGo flight 6E-1736, operating from Delhi to Doha, was diverted to Karachi due to a medical emergency on board. Unfortunately, on arrival, the passenger was declared dead by the airport medical team," the airline said. "We are deeply saddened by the news and our prayers and wishes are with his family and loved ones. We're currently making arrangements for transferring the other passengers of the flight, in co-ordination with the relevant authorities."
The flight was allowed to take off from Karachi and returned to Delhi with the body of the passenger, who was identified as Abdullah, 60, a Nigerian national, India's NDTV said.
Officials said the aircraft was parked at Karachi's Jinnah International Airport for nearly five hours. It returned to Delhi after the authorities in Karachi issued the death certificate for the passenger and all formalities were completed.
Pakistan's ARY News said the pilot's emergency landing permission request was granted by the Air Traffic Controller at the Karachi airport due to the medical emergency.
