Qatar gets its latest public art installation as the Doha Corniche is adorned with 'Gekrose', described as "one of the most monumental contemporary art pieces of our time."
This was announced on the social media pages of Qatar Creates, the year-round cultural movement and a platform for arts and culture in Qatar.
'Gekrose' is the creation of the late Austrian artist, Franz West.
"Late Austrian artist Franz West was a visionary in every sense of the word. A prolific contemporary art career culminated in his creation of 'Gekrose' in 2011, a titanic aluminum sculpture coming in a cheerful rosy hue, exuding a distinct sense of joy flowing throughout its convoluted structure," Qatar Creates explained on Instagram.
The intricate oversized piece takes up a myriad of shapes of textures, possibly evoking images of a prehistoric sea creature for one onlooker, while resembling a larger-than-life representation of human intestines for another – among countless unique ways it can be seen and perceived.
'Gekrose' has been officially inaugurated by the Theatre Park on Doha’s Corniche, part of a nationwide drive to turn Qatar’s public spaces into the world’s most exquisite public art showcases.
