The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) made a global remarkable achievement after it had won Sag award in the Geographic Information System (GIS) presented by the US multinational geographic information system software company (Esri), the leading supplier of GIS software.
In a statement on Saturday, the MoECC said that it would receive the award during the 2023 Esri User Conference which will be organised in the US city of San Diego from July 10-14. The MoECC outperformed over 100,000 institutions worldwide through displaying GIS application at Al Reem Biosphere Reserve, which highlights the criticality of the reserve and present it in a form of useful and educational story.
The application offers a combination of dynamic maps, analyses, photos and illustrations that show all aspects of the reserve and its geophysical characteristics, as well as flora and fauna, in addition to the main components of the reserve, with emphasis on highlighting the relationship between man and the biosphere, and creating interest and awareness in the community.
Al Reem Biosphere Reserve is one of the most important reserves in Qatar, in terms of local and international dimensions. It was established under the decision No 7 of 2005.
In 2007, it was declared as a vital biosphere within Unesco's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, to be Qatar's first and only reserve within this programme, and one of 30 reserves in 10 Arab states.
