Qatar's ambassador to Somalia Dr Abdullah bin Salem al-Nuaimi has underlined that the relations between Qatar and Somalia are distinguished and solid, pointing out that Qatar earns more appreciation and respect from the government and people of Somalia for its positive roles in all fields.
Based on the depth of relationship between the two countries and their co-operation in several fields, numerous memorandums of understanding and agreements have been signed, the ambassador said.
He added that Qatar is well-known for its long expertise in mediation to resolve conflicts, pointing out that Qatar's firm principle in that is pursuing peaceful solutions to disputes and repudiates all forms of violence.
He asserted that such a principle gained Qatar a good reputation to be a fair and reliable international mediator, adding that the Qatari diplomacy had a positive and effective role in mediating between Sudan, Eritrea, Djibouti and Chad along with the mediation efforts between parties in Somalia as well as efforts to restore diplomatic relations between Somalia and Kenya which overtly consolidates Qatar's status and its ability to solve disputes through negotiation, dialogue and peaceful means.
HE Dr al-Nuaimi noted the aid provided by Qatar to the Somali people, stemming from its responsibility and humanitarian role in time of crises and natural catastrophes, adding that the Qatari role did not stop at the political aspect and mediation efforts but went beyond that to encompass humanitarian and relief aid through Qatari institutions operating in the development field such as Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD), Qatar Red Crescent Society and Qatar Charity.
He added that the humanitarian aid provided by Qatar to the affected people of Somalia has been continuing since years and is stemming from the humanitarian and Islamic duty and motivated by the true fraternity, pointing out that the last one was the inauguration of a project to distribute food baskets to those affected by the drought crisis in a number of affected areas.
The ambassador said that the two countries have distinguished and solid relations in multiple fields including economic, investment and development co-operation, anticipating that such fields are poised to witness greater co-operation in the future.
Qatar has focused on the development field in projects that are beneficial for the Somali people and contribute to the local economy, he outlined, indicating that one of the most prominent examples in this regard is the implementation of Mogadishu-Jawhar road and the Mogadishu-Afgoye road project linking the capital with a number of cities, besides Qatar's contribution in rehabilitating and building the headquarters of the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Mogadishu Municipality and other projects.
He highlighted the multiple visits paid by the officials of the two countries including the visit of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Qatar last December to attend the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 tournament, followed by a second visit last March to participate in the UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries and his current visit is the third one.
Several Somali officials, including State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation Ali Mohamed Omar, visited Qatar. Shortly before that, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Khadija Mohamed Almakhzoumi paid a visit to Qatar. He also noted Qatar's participation in the inauguration ceremony of the Somali president with a high-level delegation which underscores the solid and distinguished relations between the two countries.
