The Ministry of Municipality celebrated the annual GIS Technology Day with the participation of a contingent of professionals in GIS from various state ministries, institutions, authorities, universities, and other relevant entities.
On this occasion, Assistant Director of the Geographic Information Systems (CGIS) at the Ministry of Municipality Amer al-Humaidi said this year's celebration highlights the GIS' success story in Qatar in addition to following-up on its evolution over many years, as well as introducing the GIS applications and the positive impact of the evolution of geospatial technologies worldwide.
This year's celebration comes under the theme of: "Artificial Intelligence (AI) and sustainability and how GIS technology can cater to it," al-Humaidi added, pointing out that experts concur in the fact that combining AI and geospatial technologies can handle enormous quantities of data and conduct spatial analysis on them in addition to coming out with new and more accurate digital and spatial products to help decision-makers achieve the strategic objectives and better understand the clients to serve them, he said.
He outlined that AI's applications in GIS include identifying the geographic elements to be ultimately classified and processed, pointing out that machine learning algorithms help extract spatial patterns and relationships between data elements, and this includes improving performance and pushing towards digital transformation, which leads to organizations achieving their sustainability goals.
The strategy of the Geographic Information Systems lays the foundations of fulfilling Qatar's increasing geospatial needs through adopting the cutting-edge technologies to build effective and smart community and improve life quality, al-Humaidi underlined. The digital transformation is the essence of economic and social development for Qatar in conformity with the Qatar National Vision 2030, he stressed, noting that Qatar is pivoting towards digital technology in all fields to accelerate this direction.
