Three Birla Public School (BPS) students have been awarded the third prize in the National Olympiad for Creativity in Math and Science 2023, organised by the Department of Educational Supervision in Qatar.
The students' project was recognised as an exemplary demonstration of their creativity, ingenuity, and dedication to STEM education, a statement from the school said.
BPS was selected from over 200 schools that applied for the initial rounds.
The project was developed by Jai Aadhithya, Mahika Rao, and Nihal Ashik, all from grade XII. They were guided and supported by Department of Mathematics head Shibumon P S and teachers Anu Antony, Nisha Unnikrishnan, and Nancy Baiju.
The name of the project is S.A.F.E, which stands for 'Shark Alert and Flagging Equipment'. The project involves a robotic device that can detect and identify sharks in the water using an SSD mobile net AI classification model, and alert nearby swimmers or divers using a flagging system. The device can also be used for other purposes such as counting species of marine life, monitoring endangered species and collecting data on water quality.
The National Olympiad for Creativity in Math and Science is held annually. BPS management and senior leadership team lauded the achievers.
