Marking this year's World Environment Day, Al Meera Consumer Goods Company Monday announced that it has recycled 45.5mn bottles to date and awarded 97mn rewards points to members for supporting recycling initiatives.
Celebrated every year on June 5, the World Environment Day aims to raise awareness and encourage action for the protection of the environment. It is supported by many non-governmental organisations, businesses, and government entities, and represents the primary United Nations outreach day to support the environment.
Al Meera has pioneered several recycling projects. The company recently launched the first dedicated electronics recycling station.
Al Meera also promotes reusable bags, offers reverse vending machines to recycle plastic bottles and aluminum cans, paper recycling, and a battery recycling initiative.
Al Meera gave 5X reward points to Meera Rewards members who recycle their bottles and cans through Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) and participate in the recycling activities at any of its recycling stations across its branches.
To celebrate World Environment Day, customers were also encouraged to use Al Meera reusable bags for a chance to enter an online draw through Al Meera’s social media pages to win QR500 worth of Meera Rewards Points.
Al Meera also embarks on regular beach clean-up campaigns in collaboration with local universities, government entities and other major players in the private sector.
The company always joins hands with the authorities concerned, especially the Ministry of Municipality and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, as well as other environmental organisations.
As the retailer with the largest branch network in the country, Al Meera believes in the importance of sustainability, environment protection and preservation of natural resources, and make a top priority in its daily operations, a statement added.
