The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) will present a concert on June 11 at The Hamilton International School Theatre in Mesaimeer, featuring the timeless compositions of Tchaikovsky and Sibelius. QPO will be led by German conductor Elias Grandy, who served as the music director of Heidelberg's Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra from 2015 to 2023.The programme will commence with Jean Sibelius' remarkable Violin Concerto in D Minor, Op. 47 – a work that has established itself as an essential piece in every violinist's repertoire.Sibelius began composing this concerto in 1903 and completed his final revision in 1905. Regarded as one of the greatest violin concertos of the 20th century, it is revered for its virtuosic nature, captivating performers and audiences alike.Taking centre stage as the featured soloist for Sibelius' Violin Concerto is QPO’s own concertmaster, Lionel Schmit. Renowned for his phenomenological approach to music, Schmit's profound musicality and nuanced interpretation have earned him critical acclaim. Ouest France quoted "His rich and subtle sonority acts like a magic spell".Following the spellbinding rendition of Sibelius' concerto, the evening will culminate with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Op. 74, affectionately known as the Pathétique Symphony.This symphony holds a significant place in Tchaikovsky's work as his final completed symphony. Originally titled "The Passionate Symphony" in Russian (Патетическая- Pateticheskaya), it delves deep into the realm of human emotions, offering a profound and introspective musical journey.
