The “Made in Qatar” programme, which is being held as part of activities at the Ajyal Film Festival, is returning after being absent in last year’s edition.
The Doha Film Institute (DFI) is accepting applications until September 2 from filmmakers in Qatar to participate in the 11th edition of the festival.
The festival will officially be launched from November 8-16, building on the DFI’s history of community-based programming, and on the success achieved by the festival in its previous editions.
In addition to the series of film screenings that the institution holds throughout the year, the festival seeks to bridge cultural gaps and bring together different generations through activities and events designed to generate creative interaction between the different sectors of the region's society.
For the “Made in Qatar” section, applications may be received for feature films or documentaries of any length.
The film’s screenwriter, director, or producer must be Qatari or hold a valid residency in Qatar, or that most of the film's scenes were filmed in Qatar, or that the film revolves around Qatar.
The best narrative film will receive a cash prize of $5,000, and the best documentary film will receive $5,000.
Also up for grabs is the Abdul Aziz Jassim Award for Best Acting Performance of $3,000, plus the special jury’s mention.
The festival is designed to encourage and promote educational cinema programmes in the region, providing an entertainment experience for families and educators through collective and individual communication through the medium of cinema.
At the same time, the festival provides an open forum for dialogue among its participants, as they discuss the wide range of challenges faced by today's youth.
The festival not only helps to establish a rising generation of storytellers, but also offers them a safe platform to express themselves with their own voices.
The festival comprises two sections: “Ajyal Competition” and “Made in Qatar”.
In addition to the official film programme, the festival offers special screenings and tributes to several themes: *Cinema Under the Stars, *Cinema Drive-Ins, and *Ajyal Creativity Centre.
The “Ajyal Competition” is considered the most important element of the festival, as it gives hundreds of young people from all over the world the opportunity to participate in the jury that chooses the winners of the festival’s competition prizes.
