Bin Ghannam Island, popularly known as 'The Purple Island', is considered one of the most beautiful natural havens in Qatar and a perfect place for nature lovers and with its ample mangroves, quiet beach and serene desert. Purple Island was named in 2022 among the 50 Best Islands in the World by global travel site Big 7 Travel. Located around 50km north of Doha, the island is easily accessible through the highway leading to Al Khor City. Any type of vehicle can easily access the place, as motorists have to park their vehicles before the wooden bridge, which in itself is a very interesting place to explore the island. There is a small cottage located midway alongside the bridge where visitors can relax, enjoy the scenery and even take good photos without annoying the various birds there. The island acquires this interesting name from the rich presence of purple dye-producing shells, known as murex over 3,000 years ago, that were once collected by ancient inhabitants. Such purple dye was considered a precious prize in those times as it was often associated with royalty and nobility. Besides the key historical and ecological importance of the place, it is a must-go place for people who enjoy natural beauty and a little breakaway from modern life with all its hustles.
