Qatar is participating in the 52nd session of the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights, which kicked off in Cairo Sunday at the headquarters of the Secretariat General of the League of Arab States.
HE the Director of Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Turki bin Abdulla al-Mahmoud chaired Qatar's delegation to the two-day event.
The session will discuss permanent items, foremost of which are Israeli violations and racist practices in the occupied Arab territories, ways to address the dilemma of Arab prisoners and detainees in Israeli prisons, and the bodies of Palestinian and Arab martyrs detained by the Israeli occupation authorities, as well as proposed items including the impact of climate change on human rights and enhancing Arab cooperation in the field of combating human trafficking.
The meeting will also adopt the slogan of Arab Human Rights Day 2024, in addition to following up the activities to be held to mark the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 20th anniversary of the Arab Charter on Human Rights.
In her inaugural speech, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of Social Affairs Sector of the League of Arab States, Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh touched on the topics on the agenda, highlighting that the Palestinian people are deprived of their land, humanity, and most basic rights owing to occupation. She added that today's program includes a recorded speech by Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967.
The Committee's recommendations are due to discussed in the 160th regular session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level in Sep.
The 52nd regular session is held under the presidency of Kuwait, and with the participation of the concerned government agencies in the Arab League Member States, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations with observer status, and the concerned authorities in the joint Arab action system.
