As part of its humanitarian intervention to help the victims of conflict in Sudan, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) recently completed the distribution of 40 tonnes of food aid in River Nile State.
Done in co-operation with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS), the distribution ceremony was attended by Dr Tahani Mirghani, the state’s Minister of Social Affairs; Afaf Taj al-Sir, the state’s commissioner for Humanitarian Aid; and Othman Mohamed, executive director of Al-Damer District.
A total of 1,000 families received two-week food parcels that contained food staples like sugar, tea, vegetable oil, rice, lentils, and flour. In addition, quantities of non-food items (NFIs) were also distributed. The beneficiaries were people displaced by war and flooding in Atbara and southern Al-Damar.
Dr Mirghani thanked Qatar and QRCS for standing by Sudan and providing non-stop support to those affected by the conflict. She said the recent aid targeted those who came to the state to flee the fighting in Khartoum, just to find themselves stuck in floods.
Dr Salah Daak, head of QRCS’ office in Sudan, said the aid distributed would help more than 5,000 people affected by war and floods in River Nile State, under a multisector project implemented by QRCS to help the victims of conflict in Sudan.
QRCS was among the first organisations to respond to the conflict, through the Qatari airlift. It has reached out to 12 states, providing emergency medical, hygiene, and food aid in such states.
