Within the framework of a humanitarian intervention and with the support of the Qatari people, Qatar Charity (QC) performed thousands of corrective eye surgeries for children and the elderly in Ghana and provided them with free medicines under the Ebsar initiative.
As many as 4,857 beneficiaries were examined and 462 underwent corrective eye surgeries, a statement said yesterday.
Joseph, a student in a school for the blind, said that he was blind in both eyes, but now he is happy because he can see well after the surgery.
Christiana, a teacher at the Blind School, thanked the Qatari people for the impact they had on the blind beneficiaries of the school. She said, had it not been for QC's intervention, all these children would have had no hope of medical treatment, and would have remained blind, perhaps for the rest of their lives.
The Ebsar initiative aims to reduce cases of avoidable visual impairment in the target countries where QC works in coordination with the health authorities. It is being implemented in 10 countries: Senegal, Somalia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Mali, Nepal, and Nigeria.
While the implementation of the initiative’s projects has been completed in several countries such as Ghana and Tanzania, the rest of the projects will continue until the end of 2023, the statement added.
