Qatar appreciated the pivotal role of the UN Central Emergency Response Fund, and praised the important achievements made by the fund to ensure a rapid and co-ordinated response to meet global humanitarian needs, especially for the most vulnerable groups, including those affected by armed conflicts.
This was included in a statement of Qatar before the annual high-level pledging conference for the Central Emergency Response Fund, delivered by Qatar's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Jassim Sayar al-Maawda, at the UN headquarters in New York.
He expressed Qatar's appreciation of the valuable efforts of the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs, most notably convening this meeting which reflects the global co-operation and efforts mobilisation, especially in light of the rise of the urgent humanitarian challenges and the crises facing the world today.
He clarified that the UN Central Emergency Response Fund is currently of high relevance more than any other time, particularly considering the unprecedented humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip due the practices of the Israeli occupation authorities, which blatantly violate the humanitarian international law.
In this respect, he noted the efforts of Qatar to meet the urgent humanitarian needs for thousands of Palestinian families in Gaza. Qatar seeks to provide direct support through the UN Central Emergency Response Fund, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Global Food Programme and other UN agencies.
Al-Maawda said that "we are proud that Qatar is among the first countries to contribute to the fund since its inception. We take this opportunity to note that the total contributions made by Qatar to the Central Emergency Response Fund for the period 2006-2023 exceeded $19mn."
Based on Qatar's belief in the importance of solidarity and partnerships at the international level, especially in emergencies, and recognising the important role of the Central Emergency Response Fund, through the Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Qatar is proud to announce that it will provide support to the Fund in the amount of $1mn for 2024.
This is part of the contribution agreement to be signed soon between Qatar Development Fund and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. He confirmed that Qatar will not spare any efforts to continue its support to the Fund and will remain an active and reliable partner in the humanitarian response efforts.
