The Sheikh Abdulla Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Centre (Fanar) held a symposium under the theme 'Arabic language is a communicative bridge and civilisational dialogue: experience of the Abdulla Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud Islamic Cultural Centre as a model'.
The event was attended by HE the Minister of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs Ghanem bin Shaheen bin Ghanem al-Ghanim in the presence of professional teachers from Qatar University (QU)’s Arabic for Non-Native Speakers Centre (ANNS).
Addressing the symposium, Fabar general manager Dr Saleh bin Ali al-Marri said that the symposium coincides with the UN Arabic Language Day, which falls on December 18 each year, affirming that Qatar and its institutions, including the Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs, are interested in Arabic language, along with its role in extending the bridge of communication with others, as well as building a civilisational dialogue through which cultures converge.
He said that the Arabic is the language of the Qu'ran, the Islamic religion, culture, and beauty, as well as the civilisational communication, pointing out that tens of thousands of learners have benefited from Fanar's programme, including diplomats and academics.
Al-Marri emphasised that HE al-Ghanem has been supportive of symposia held by the ministry's departments, positively reflecting on the cultural movement and representing a powerful momentum to exert further dedication to serving wide spectrums of communities.
Addressing the symposium, Fanar Islamic Culture Department director Dr Ahmed Abdul Rahim al-Tahan outlined that the event marks the conclusion of Fanar's annual activities.
He said that every year the centre tries to keep up with the developments and holds events to advance the Arabic language.
During the symposium, a documentary was screened highlighting Fanar's activities and courses in teaching Arabic for non-native speakers, during which representatives of communities, including the Turkish and Indian communities, commended Fanar’s efforts.
Professional teachers from the ANNS presented a range of vital themes and research papers on the Arabic language during the event.
The number of beneficiaries of the programmes offered by Fanar in the Arabic language has so far reached 24,130 students: 11,165 males and 12,965 females.
