The winter starts astronomically Friday, the Department of Meteorology has said.
This day, which is known as Winter Solstice, marks the end of autumn and the beginning of winter. It happens because of the 23.5° tilt of the Earth's rotational axis while orbiting around the sun where the sun become perpendicular to the Tropic of Capricorn on this day. This year the Winter Solstice falls on 22 December and it will also be the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern hemisphere, with no sunrise or sunset at the Arctic circle.
