Umm Salal clinched their maiden Ooredoo Cup (Qatar Stars Cup) title after a thrilling 3-1 win on penalties against Al Arabi on Saturday. At the Grand Hamad Stadium, both teams came out all guns blazing in an end-to-end contest, which ended 4-4 in regulation time.
But it was the welfare of Andy Delort which was in everyone’s mind as the Umm Salal captain collapsed and started convulsing on the field in the 16th minute. Thankfully the French striker, who was quickly attended to by the medical staff at the stadium, returned to collect the winner’s trophy from Hani Ballan, CEO of the Qatar Stars League.
Delort had earlier put his team ahead in sixth minute but ten minutes later the striker fell to the ground. He was carried off the field after receiving lengthy treatment on the field, with Nasser al-Nasr replacing his captain. Delort was seen on the bench during the second half and later came to celebrate with his teammates after Wassem Keddari’s penalty was saved by Senegal goalkeeper Landing Badji.
Delort, who has scored five goals and provided four assists in 12 matches for Umm Salal, joined the team last summer from French club Nantes.
Apart from Delort, Ilyass Hameed (37th minute), Marwan Loudani (40th minute), and Ali Afif (90+1 minute) as Umm Salal led 3-1 at half time. But Arabi fought back in the second half through goals from Omar al-Somah (45th+14 minute penalty and 81st minute), Ibrahim Naser Kalla (49th minute) and Salem Reda Salem (75th minute).
In the penalty shootout, al-Somah, Naser Kalla, Wassem missed their kick as Umm Salal ran away with the title for the first after three attempts.
