Russia called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Friday to discuss the military strikes carried out by the United States and Britain on Yemen.
"Russia has requested an urgent UN Security Council meeting on January 12 in connection with US and UK strikes on Yemen," the Russian Permanent Mission to the UN said.
The United States, the United Kingdom and eight other countries launched earlier Friday a joint statement affirming that military strikes have been conducted against Houthi targets in Yemen with the aim of de-escalating tensions and restore stability in the Red Sea.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticized the strikes against Yemen, saying: "The US air strikes in Yemen are yet another example of the distortion of UN Security Council resolutions and the blatant disregard for international law."
The developments are in conjunction with the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza Strip since October 7, amid fears of a widening escalation in the region.
