Qatar’s World Cup stadiums featured in American Society of Civil Engineers magazine

A research project on Qatar’s FIFA World Cup 2022 stadiums was recently published in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Magazine. The November-December 2023 edition of the magazine carried two articles covering the findings of the research, and featured Al Bayt Stadium on its digital cover, and Lusail Stadium on its printed cover. Undertaken by Qatar University and funded by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), the research aimed to share lessons learned and innovations in engineering from the delivery of a mega-project of this size. The study looked at the unique designs of Qatar’s FIFA World Cup stadiums, which were inspired by Qatari and Arab culture, as well as the engineering feats behind their construction and completion.Eng. Ghanim Al Kuwari, SC Deputy Director General, Technical Services, said: "We are delighted to see this important research paper on Qatar’s FIFA World Cup stadiums in one of the world’s most well-respected engineering publications. The project chronicles the tremendous engineering feats applied in building Qatar’s tournament infrastructure, and is part of its legacy.”He added: "This research will act as a reference to the engineering sector, as well as to future mega-event hosts. Organisers can refer to the research when applying projects of a similar size and magnitude. It shares the successes and lessons learned during the construction of Qatar’s tournament infrastructure, which was designed to the highest of engineering standards and introduced many innovations in the field of sustainable construction and operation.”Dr. Nasser Alnuaimi, Assistant Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, Qatar University said: "I am pleased to see our articles on the cover of the ASCE Magazine. The World Cup showcased Qatar’s innovative spirit through civil engineering. As the world celebrated the first World Cup in the Arab world and Middle East, the legacy of these stadiums will continue to resonate, showcasing the power of innovation, collaboration and sustainable development in civil engineering.”Eight stadiums hosted the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which carry unique designs and various certifications for sustainability, innovation and architectural excellence. Football memories and history were made in each of the venues during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, culminating in Argentina’s historic win in Lusail Stadium. The ASCE is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1853 to represent members of the civil engineering profession worldwide.
