Al Sadd SC will be on a mission to end a long wait in the AFC Champions League Elite Finals. The Qatari side will face Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale in what promises to be a titanic quarter-final at the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium on Sunday.Al Sadd will be brimming with confidence after sealing the Qatar Stars League title, emerging champions for the 18th time and then reaching the Qatar Cup final.The league title was a remarkable achievement as they had to come from behind to upstage Al Duhail, who had led the title race for the major part of the season but had to concede to Al Sadd’s superiority, with Felix Sanchez’s side defeating Al Ahli 5-0 to end the season two points in front.They will hope for a similar outcome on the continental stage, having advanced to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2019. Al Sadd, however, will feel they will be challenging for the title after easily advancing past the group stage.They impressed in the Round of 16 as well, defeating UAE’s Al Wasl 4-2 on aggregate to set up the showdown with Frontale. Akram Afif will be their focal point, with the mercurial winger already on five goals in the AFC Champions League Elite and having found the back of the net 18 times as Al Sadd won the Qatar Stars League title.Al Sadd concluded its training in Doha on Thursday, as they reached Jeddah on Friday ahead of the clash against Frontale.
