The Shura Council participated in the meetings of the 18th session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) and its associated meetings, which concluded on Tuesday in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire.Council members HE Saad bin Ahmed al-Mesned and HE Khalid bin Abas Kamal al-Emadi represented Qatar at the four-day event themed 'The OIC role in combating global climate change'.The deliberations focused on several topics related to environment and sustainable development, and ways to enhance co-operation and co-ordination between the parliaments of the OIC member states to achieve development goals.Also on the agenda were ways to battle desertification, especially in the Sahel Region, boost co-operation to preserve water resources, protect the environment and combat climate change, and the pan-OIC scientific and technical co-operation.Addressing the conference, HE al-Mesned highlighted Qatar's efforts to battle climate change via bolstering current policies to eliminate carbon emissions, in line with the directives of its wise leadership. The current global measures are no longer sufficient, he added, demanding the adoption of further measures to rein in global warming to avoid losses and adapt to climate change.He called for further regional cooperation to address the climate change challenges, increase development cooperation in order to provide clean energy, devise initiatives to increase investments, intensify efforts to remove carbon dioxide, promote renewables, and provide quality education in less developed countries.Touching on the situation in the Gaza Strip, HE al-Mesned highlighted the State of Qatar's endeavors and efforts in cooperation with all active parties, to stop the brutal Israeli aggression on the Strip and provide the necessary humanitarian aid.Earlier, the Shura Council delegation took part in the 10th meeting of the Standing Specialised Committee on Economic Affairs and Environment of the Parliamentary Union of the Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as part of the 18th session of PUIC. The meeting discussed a number of topics related to economic and environmental cooperation among the OIC parliaments and the draft resolutions submitted to the Standing Specialized Committee on Economic Affairs and Environment.
