At least 12 people were killed and eight others were rescued Wednesday in a coal mine explosion in Harani district in Balochistan province, southwestern Pakistan.
Local media said that ten miners were working in the mine run by a private company in the Khost mining region, at a depth of 244 meters, when the explosion caused by methane gas occurred and led to the collapse of a large part of the mine. Following the explosion, a group of local miners tried to rescue the trapped workers, but they were trapped there as well.
Mine workers complained that a lack of safety equipment and poor working conditions were the main causes of frequent accidents, labour union officials said.
