The Package 3 of the Doha Central Development and Beautification Project is expected to be completed during the third quarter of this year, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has said. According to the Ashghal website, the works are nearing completion in Doha where the project brings a remarkable facelift in terms of infrastructure development and beautification. The project is implemented within the works of the Supervisory Committee for the Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar.
Doha Central Development and Beautification Project includes developing the areas around Grand Hamad Street, by developing and beautifying main streets and internal neighbourhoods in these areas, in addition to the infrastructure development works. “Doha Central Development and Beautification Project aims to make Doha City Centre ‘A Destination of Choice’ while meeting the needs of its people and visitors and creates memorable experiences by linking people to places and destinations through a convenient, safe and accessible public realm where Central Doha’s landmarks become points of destination that help users create the mental map of their surrounding environment,” Ashghal said.
The project objectives are achieved by providing pedestrian-friendly transportation including footpaths and crossings to encourage visitors to use various modes of transportation and to promote walking by connecting all lively centres in the area. Implementing the complete vision of the development of the area will contribute to enhancing the identity of Qatar's historical and cultural legacy and recognising the natural environment of Qatar.
At a cost of QR565,726,279, the project features developing 10.2km of surface water drainage network, 11.2km of foul sewer drainage network and 4.7km of electricity network. Also, 515 decorative lighting poles are installed, 3,250 trees are planted and about 30,000 sq m of green areas are developed. As much as 35.3-km long pedestrian and cycling paths are constructed. As part of the project, Ashghal has covered the main streets with granite to give a unique feature to this area.
The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar works in co-ordination with several ministries and entities in Qatar such as the Ministry of Municipality, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Culture, Qatar Museums, Qatar Rail and Private Engineering Office. It aims to add a humanitarian touch to cities with its vision to create a balance between people and the environment and change the car-dominated culture into a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly culture. The committee’s main responsibility is to provide public services and spaces that promote a healthier lifestyle aiming to achieve a joint vision with other common stakeholders.
