The second edition of the Truffle Exhibition and Auction at Souq Waqif started Thursday, highlighting the Qatari bond with the traditional earthy fungi. Held at the eastern square of Souq Waqif, the exhibition features truffles from Saudi Arabia and Algeria. In a statement from the Private Engineering Office, the general supervisor of Souq Waqif Truffle Exhibition and Auction, Mohamed al-Salem, said that the market management has taken steps to that the auction area was fully prepared, in co-ordination with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. “The quantities available are good for the beginning of the season,” he said. “A significant increase is expected in the coming weeks as the truffle harvesting season peaks in countries like Algeria, Libya, Iraq, Tunisia and Iran.” “The truffles available at the exhibition are coming from Saudi Arabia and Algeria,” al-Salem added. Truffles for the daily auction are received starting at 5am. Specialists inspect them to ensure quality before the auction from 8am to 12 noon. Free parking is available for visitors at Al Qubaib Mosque parking lot for up to 30 minutes. “With the onset of winter, Qataris flock to markets to buy the desert fungi, which are considered exquisite food,” said truffle auction yard supervisor Jamal al-Ishaq. “Truffles are rich in nutrients and commonly used in preparing traditional dishes, making them a winter favourite across the Gulf region.” He added that the upcoming days will witness the advent of local Qatari truffle. The prices range from QR500-2,000 for a box. Al-Ishaq said that a high turnout of buyers is expected due to the market's location in Souq Waqif, which supports the traditional trade of truffles.
