Qatar has affirmed investing heavily in building strong, cohesive and dynamic families, in order to create a strong foundation for promoting and protecting human rights for all family members, with its commitment to achieve their goals of maintaining a prosperous country. This came in a speech delivered by HE Permanent Representative of State of Qatar to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva Dr Hind bint Abdulrahman al-Muftah, during an event organized by Qatar's permanent delegation to the UN Office in Geneva, as well as the permanent delegation of Saudi Arabia and the permanent delegation of Egypt in Geneva. The event was organized on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Families on May 22 in Geneva, with the attendance of several diplomats accredited to the UN Office in Geneva and their families.HE al-Muftah said that children deserve to live in a safe environment to grow properly, study, learn and pursue their dreams, pointing out that this embodies the role of family in society, which lies in ensuring that family members, especially children, enjoy human rights to the fullest, by protecting them and teaching them values and principles that can help them become good citizens in the future, and provide them with a sense of belonging. This is the reason why the family is recognized as a basic unit in society, she said, adding that any impact on this unit inevitably affects society as a whole. HE Permanent Representative said that, despite the rapid changes in life, the family is still considered a model for preserving the social fabric by transmitting traditions, cultural values, customs and heritage from one generation to another, adding that the family remains the defender on the front line for the rights of its members against risks and challenges.HE al-Muftah pointed out that the International Day of Families celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2024, noting that this day provides an opportunity to evoke family values as well as its role in life. On this year's International Day of Families, a devastating world is witnessed due to wars and conflicts that have cast a dark shadow on families around the globe, Dr al-Muftah said, indicating that Qatar is doing its utmost to alleviate the suffering of families, by providing direct aid, or working to protect children from the scourge of war, reunite them with their families, and ensure a better future for them.HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to UN in Geneva called on everyone to celebrate this occasion with greater co-operation on family issues and to strengthen policies and programs that promote and protect the human rights of all family members, pointing out that Qatar has recently designated a day to celebrate 'Family Day in Qatar,' which falls on April 15 of every year.
