With Ramadan entering the final part, Doha’s Souq Al Ali has started to feel the Eid rush. People are flocking to the market, one of the prime destinations for cloth shopping for Qataris.A number of shoppers told local Arabic daily Arrayah that they prefer to complete the Eid shopping early to avoid the final rush and crowd during the final days of Ramadan. With several tailoring shops, Souq Al Ali is one of the traditional and popular markets for stitching Qatari men’s clothing. The Souq also has shops that offer men’s traditional headwear (gatra) and skull caps (gahfiya) along with prayer beads, stationery, pins, perfumes, incense, watches, leather wallets and footwear.Shoppers said that many opt to come to the market due to the availability of tailors skilled in traditional Qatari clothes (thobes). They noted that Qatari dress, whether it be the thobe, ghutra, or agal, is a manifestation of Eid celebrations, ensuring an elegant appearance for Eid.“Wearing new and beautiful clothes is one way to demonstrate Allah’s blessings upon us,” a shopper said. Many opt for traditional dress as a way to instil Qatari traditions in the young generations.The market records great demand for custom-made Eid clothes. Souq Al Ali, according to the tailors there, is special for its ability to deliver the clothes after stitching in a maximum of two days’ time.“The shops are fully prepared for Eid. It’s a highly anticipated annual season. We provide all types of fabrics and employ the most qualified tailors,” said Mohammed Russell Hussein, a tailors at the market.“There are ready-made clothes, both white and coloured. Parents flock to the market with their children to buy or have their clothes tailored for Eid,” he said. The prices for the thobes range between QR110 and QR200. “The shops possess the required expertise and speed, making it a preferred destination for Qataris seeking Eid clothing for themselves or their children. Souq Al Ali is one of the old popular markets with reasonable prices. It is a convenient destination that meets all the family’s needs, whether for Eid or Garangao,” said Ahmed al-Ali, who came to shop. “All materials are available in the market and the tailors are skilled and experienced. Above all, the prices are reasonable and affordable,” he added.Abdul Aziz al-Yafei, another Qatari shopper, said Souq Al Ali has been the most preferred location for tailoring Qatari thobes for generations. He noted that since his childhood, he has been frequenting Souq Al Ali to tailor clothes, given the availability of all kinds of materials and colours.
