Nigerian authorities announced Wednesday that there is no longer any hope for finding at least 20 miners alive, after being trapped for more than a week inside a mine that collapsed.
The incident occurred on June 3, and led to the detention of artisanal miners employed by a local company in the village of Galkogo in the Shiroro region of Niger State in the center of the country.
A local official explained that the rescue operation did not officially stop, noting that due to the lack of equipment, craftsmen were used to dig the rocks covering the hole using chisels, which is a slow and arduous process.
