The livestock market at Al Wakra Central Market saw as much as 80% increase in sheep sales on the first day of Eid al-Adha holidays and during the past two days, compared to the previous period, traders said.

Further, speaking to local Arabic daily Arrayah, salesmen pointed out that the turnout of both Qatari and expatriate customers has been excellent during the past few days, with most customers seeking locally produced sheep or Jordanian and Syrian sheep. The prices of local sheep ranged from QR1,300 and QR1,500 per head, while the Syrian ranged between QR1,400 and QR1,700 and the Jordanian sheep QR1,200 and QR1,300.

Most salesmen at the market stressed that the sales have been excellent even though there was abundant supply of sheep subsidised by the government for the Qatari citizens, as many preferred to buy more. The local market also had different varieties of sheep in stock.

They also admitted that the retail prices this year have been under control due to adequate supply through the initiative for subsidised local sheep. Besides, the good production of local barns and farms have considerably participated towards increasing the number of sheep on display at the market.
