Five teams have competed in the recent Philippine Independence Day (PID) Basketball Cup 2024, at the University of Doha for Science and Technology’s Multipurpose Hall.
The event - marking the 126th Philippine Independence Day - featured teams of Brgy Malasakit, JRM Kabalen, 3 John's Barbershop, Stallions Hoopers, and Ashghals.
A large number of fans cheered for their teams at the thrilling competition, which crowned two champions: 3 John's Barbershop and Brgy Malasakit. After the final buzzer, the two teams ended with the same score of 68.
Speaking at the event, Philippine ambassador Lillibeth V Pono highlighted the importance of sports in fostering camaraderie, unity, and national pride among Filipinos abroad. She commended all the teams for their dedication and sportsmanship, emphasising the spirit of 'bayanihan' that the PID Cup embodies.
Organised by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Qatar, Pinoy Basketball of Qatar (Pibaq), the PID Cup 2024 showcased the athletic prowess of the Filipino community in Qatar. It also strengthened the bonds among Filipinos and celebrated their shared heritage and independence.
Organisers noted that the PID Cup 2024 would undoubtedly be remembered as one of the highlights of this year’s Independence Day festivities, inspiring future generations to continue the tradition of excellence and unity.
