Qatar University (QU) celebrated this semester the graduation of seven exceptional PhD researchers who have significantly contributed to various healthcare fields, solidifying QU's commitment to advancing medical knowledge.

“We are honoured to recognise our talented researchers,” said Dr Mashael al-Shafie, director of Graduate Studies at QU Health. “Their dedication, coupled with our outstanding doctoral programmes, has fuelled groundbreaking research that has the potential to improve healthcare outcomes and positively impact patients' lives.”

Majdoleen Alalawneh (PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences) investigated the impact of obesity on medication, aiming to personalise treatment approaches under the supervision of Prof Ahmed Awaisu. Duaa al-Sadeq (PhD in Medical Sciences) explored methods to restore activity in mutated genes for a specific genetic disorder using a structural and functional approach supervised by Dr Michail Nomikos.

Lubna Therachiyil (PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences) delved into the role of proteins in ovarian cancer stem cell development and chemoresistance, mentored by Dr Hesham Korashy. Fatima Qafoud (PhD in Biomedical Sciences) focused on uncovering the genetic mechanisms behind a specific heart condition in Qatari families, potentially improving diagnosis and risk assessment with the guidance of Prof Asma Althani.

Sarah al-Ashmar (PhD in Medical Sciences) analysed vascular remodelling in hypertension, focusing on the effects of mechanical stretch on cells and genes/proteins, supervised by Dr Asad Zeidan. Dr Gulsen Guliz Anlar (PhD in Medical Sciences) investigated the molecular mechanisms behind a specific vascular condition, potentially informing preventative and therapeutic strategies under the supervision of Dr Zeidan.

Queenie Fernandes (PhD in Medical Sciences—Fall 2023) successfully defended her dissertation in the previous semester. Her research focused on the co-presence of viruses in colorectal cancer, and her supervisor was Prof Ala-Eddin Al Moustafa.

Dr Zeidan, the graduate programme coordinator for the College of Medicine, expressed his pride in the graduates' achievements: “Witnessing their dedication is truly inspiring. Their contributions will significantly impact the healthcare landscape.”

Dr Anlar commented on her experience: “My PhD journey at Qatar University was transformative, igniting a deeper passion for scientific exploration. The university's resources and technology fostered a unique environment for my research. I am grateful for the guidance and support throughout this journey.”

Qafoud emphasised her passion for improving cardiovascular health: “My research benefits current patients and empowers future generations with preventive knowledge. I am incredibly grateful for the support of the Health Sector Graduate Studies Office.”
