Al Meera Consumer Goods Company has launched a campaign to reduce plastic bag use, in line with its commitment to environmental sustainability and on the occasion of ‘International Day Without Plastic Bags’.

The initiative is part of Al Meera's social responsibility programme and aligns with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change's (MoECC) efforts. Al Meera is partnering with QTerminals for the campaign.

Al Meera highlighted that this initiative encourages community members to opt for eco-friendly shopping bags instead of plastic, ultimately contributing to waste reduction.

The MoECC set up a pavilion at Al Meera's Ain Khaled/Umm Al Seneem branch and disseminated educational messages promoting environmentally friendly habits in daily life. To encourage public participation, the ministry organised a competition with a total prize pool of QR5,000 in shopping vouchers.

The ministry highlighted the importance of reducing plastic bag use and adopting eco-friendly alternatives for promoting environmental sustainability and protecting Qatar's natural resources.

QTerminals echoed Al Meera's vision for a sustainable future, highlighting that this participation demonstrates its commitment to environmental preservation.

This year's campaign features Al Meera distributing over 100,000 paper shopping bags across its branches. It aims to encourage customers to embrace eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastic bags.

Every year on July 3, the world observes ‘International Plastic Bag Free Day’. This global initiative tackles plastic pollution by raising awareness about the environmental damage caused by single-use plastic bags. Launched in September 2016, the day emphasises the importance of transitioning away from these highly prevalent and detrimental disposable bags.

Al Meera has consistently launched a series of campaigns aimed at raising community awareness about the importance of environmental preservation and sustainability, in alignment with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030. Additionally, through its Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) at various locations nationwide, Al Meera has facilitated the recycling of over 66mn bottles and cans.
