French train operator SNCF said that France's high-speed rail network was hit by "malicious acts" including arson attacks that have disrupted the transport system hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics 2024.
In a statement to AFP, SNCF said that it was the victim of several simultaneous malicious acts overnight, adding that traffic on the affected lines was heavily disrupted and the situation would last through the weekend as repairs are conducted.
This incident comes at a time when all eyes are on the French capital, which is hosting the 2024 Olympics. The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, taking place later today, will be held outside the main stadium for the first time in history. Traditionally, spectators have watched this event from the stands, but this year, it will be conducted amid heightened security measures.
