The 3rd edition of the Katara Space Science Programme (KSSP), organised by MAPS International in collaboration with Katara - Cultural Village, was launched Tuesday.

The three-day session has over 600 registrations, comprising students, educators, and space science enthusiasts from 97 schools and 34 nationalities.

In his opening statement, Katara general manager Prof Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti, described the space science programme features distinguished professors and scientists sharing their expertise and scientific experiences.

He hoped the programme would encourage young people to engage in scientific research, creativity and excellence in this vital field. The development of a new generation armed with culture, science and knowledge is at the forefront of Katara's goals, which always strive to open up science, including space science, through Al Thuraya Planetarium.

The August KSSP session has the theme "James Webb Space Telescope - How Did They Make It?" and features scientists from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), and the University of Sharjah.

Among the speakers are: Jim Adams, Former Nasa chief technologist; Dr Rene Doyon, project scientist at CSA and professor at the University of Montreal, Canada; and Dr Mashhoor Ahmad al-Wardat, professor at the Department of Applied Physics and Astronomy, University of Sharjah, and director at the Sharjah Academy of Astronomy, Space Science & Technology, UAE.

A highlight of the programme is the hands-on activity where participants engage in building prototype telescopes and stargazing sessions at Al Thuraya Planetarium. Under the guidance of the visiting scientists, participants observe celestial bodies using telescopes.

The programme also features the 3rd edition of the "Cosmic Canvas: Space Art Exhibition," which will showcase exclusive fine art and photography by 21 artists. The exhibition features original prints from Nasa and holographic art by renowned artist Mariam Hashemi Brian.

The KSSP, held monthly at Al Thuraya Planetarium, is a free initiative aimed at fostering a love for space science and STEM among students, educators, and enthusiasts. Registration for future editions can be done via the programme's official link: https://apply.katarassp.net.
