Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) is set to organise a major scientific conference in November with the participation of doctors from health centres, clinics, and private hospitals across the country, coinciding with the World Diabetes Day, executive director Dr Abdullah al-Hamaq said.

Speaking to local Arabic daily Arrayah, he explained that more than 400 doctors and diabetes specialists are expected to participate in the conference to get updated on the latest developments in diabetes treatment and management, through workshops and scientific lectures presented by a group of experts.

He noted that the conference will focus on the importance of adhering to the medications and treatments prescribed by doctors to avoid complications, which often happen due to negligence in treatment or failure to follow a suitable diet. Diabetics should maintain constant communication with both their doctors and nutritionists to regulate blood sugar levels and prevent potential complications.

The conference will also focus on factors that can lead to high or low blood sugar levels, and possible complications. These include insufficient insulin or other diabetes medications, incorrect insulin injection, using expired insulin, failure to adhere to diabetic diet plan, inactivity, illness or infection, taking certain medications like steroids or immunosuppressants, injuries or surgeries, and emotional stress such as family conflicts or work-related issues.

Dr al-Hamaq highlighted that these factors inevitably lead to the complications that the conference will discuss. He will participate next month in the European Diabetes Forum, which focuses on the latest developments in diabetes, including modern devices and new medications.

QDA receives around 20,000 visits annually from clients who utilise its gym, consult with nutrition specialists, purchase diabetes measurement devices, test strips, and other services. Last year, QDA launched a free smartphone application for those living with diabetes, making it easier to access the association's services related to diabetes management.

QDA is preparing to celebrate the silver jubilee of Al Bawasil Camp in December 2025, with the participation of many children with diabetes from various countries around the world. The official explained that the camp is an interactive platform, aimed at helping children learn the best ways to manage diabetes positively, enhance their independence and confidence, and train them on the necessary steps and mechanisms to handle daily fluctuations in blood sugar levels and make decisions that correspond to these changes.

The camp allows diabetic children get to know each other in a safe environment, which encourages acceptance and integration, and empowers them to face challenges confidently, and positively. Last year, the camp hosted 66 children from 11 countries, Dr al-Hamaq.
