Australia made it a clean sweep in Scotland on Saturday by winning their third T20 international in Edinburgh comfortably before heading south to face England.
The Scots’ total of 9-149 was never likely to be enough and Cameron Green starred with ball and bat, taking three wickets and ensuring no slip-ups with a controlled 62 off 39 in Australia’s reply.
“We gave a lot of guys opportunities, and a few guys took
it, and hopefully it can lead to some good cricket in our next series,” player of the match Green said.
The only real blot for the Aussies was another duck for opener Jake Fraser-McGurk. Connolly has played just 20 professional games for the Perth Scorchers, but he was soon into the attack, bowling left arm round, in the fourth over.
“It’s been a tough week results-wise, but having an opportunity to play against a team like Australia has been fantastic. We need more of that exposure, in front of fantastic crowds. There are things we can do better, we’ll always look to keep improving. To see the Grange full and the atmosphere and support we’ve had has been the highlight. We’ve shown at times that we’re not too far away. There are very small margins when you play teams like Australia, and if you’re not on it, they’ll hurt you. Brandon McMullen’s quality is very exciting to see, and some of the young guys have come in, an exciting opportunity for them. This week has been incredible, credit to Cricket Scotland for getting this series on. We’ve loved it, and the more we can do this, the better we can get. Hopefully we can see more of this in the future, and we have to learn as much as we can from this experience,” Richie Berrington said.
Brandon McMullen hit Cooper’s fourth ball for six but the 21-year-old bowled tidily and beat the bat more than once without taking a wicket.
Scotland’s best partnership of the series was just 44 and wickets fell steadily from the moment Oli Hairs played on to Aaron Hardie for 12.
Free-swinging George Munsey was caught by Travis Head off Cameron Green for a swift 25, off 17, to leave the Scots 2-52 in the final powerplay over. Green jagged one back through the gate to bowl Scotland’s captain Richie Berrington for eight and Adam Zampa bowled Matthew Cross for seven.
“First and foremost we wanted to win, but to see some young guys step up, and guys stepped up at different moments to win us games. It’s been fantastic, we play international cricket in all conditions. It’s been 15 degrees, a different challenge. A real privilege to come here and play. We get a sense cricket is very popular here, and to come here and play has been fantastic. It’ll be nice to have the Scottish people on our side when we go down south,” Marsh said.
