The University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) has announced its participation in the Sasol Solar Challenge 2024 to promote scientific research and innovation.

The UDST selected a team of 13 students and four faculty members to design and build a solar-powered car in an integrated educational and practical initiative, in which the university will compete against some of the best universities from Europe, America and Asia, amateurs, and professionals worldwide, indicating that the project will represent the university in the international competition held in South Africa this week.

The car was designed to maximise solar photovoltaic efficiency, enabling it to generate enough energy for seven hours of daily driving on a single charge, while the team was keen to choose lightweight and durable materials to manufacture the car's body, which contributed to increasing its efficiency.

The electrical system was also designed with great precision to ensure that the car performs perfectly in all conditions.

The car's chassis was manufactured on campus, reflecting the students' high capabilities in engineering and manufacturing.

"The dedication and innovation our students have shown are truly commendable,” said UDST president Dr Salem AlNaemi. “Their participation in the Sasol Solar Challenge is a prime example of what applied education can achieve.”

“It demonstrates how our hands-on approach empowers students to tackle real-world challenges, aligning with Qatar's Third National Development Strategy, which emphasises sustainability, innovation, and human development,” he said.

"At Sasol, we are immensely proud to welcome the University of Doha for Science and Technology as the first-ever Qatar team to join the Sasol Solar Challenge," Sasol Qatar vice-president Lourens Jacobs said, adding that "this achievement marks a significant milestone not only for Qatar but also for our shared commitment to Qatar National Vision 2030”.

Sasol is an international integrated chemicals and energy company and has been present in Qatar since 2008,

"By supporting these talented students in showcasing their skills on a global stage, we are contributing to the development of future leaders who will drive Qatar's transition to a knowledge-based and sustainable economy," he continued.
